I've been thinking about beginning counseling but I still have reservations:

Choosing to begin counseling is an important decision—one that deserves thoughtful consideration. In fact, simply thinking about starting therapy is a powerful first step toward growth and healing.

There are several important questions to ask yourself as you begin this journey:

  • What challenges or concerns are you hoping to address?

  • What are your goals for counseling?

  • How much time, energy, and emotional commitment are you able to invest?

It’s also important to understand that, depending on your unique circumstances, meaningful progress may take time—sometimes months or even years. A strong therapeutic relationship is at the heart of effective counseling, so it's essential to work with a clinician you feel comfortable with and supported by.

At Greater Atlanta Family Counseling, we also recognize that not everyone enters therapy willingly. Some clients may be referred through the court system or come at the request of a parent or guardian. In these cases, building trust and rapport may take longer—and that’s okay. We are committed to meeting every client with patience, respect, and understanding, wherever they are in the process.

Can Greater Atlanta Family Counseling prescribe medication?

Yes, GAFC has a prescribing provider, however, we are not able to prescribe controlled substances at this time.

Can Greater Atlanta Family Counseling complete comprehensive psychological testing?

No. Greater Atlanta Family Counseling is not able to complete psychological testing at this time. Comprehensive Psychological Testing must be administered by a doctor in psychology, such as a PsyD or PhD. Comprehensive Psychological Testing usually includes many "batteries" of testing to evaluate for matters such as IQ, Developmental Disabilities, Cognitive Deficits, Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities, etc.

As discussed on our evaluations page, Greater Atlanta Family Counseling can assess and diagnose most psychiatric conditions, such as Major Depressive Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, etc.

Furthermore, we frequently collaborate with clinical psychologists to follow recommendations made after a Comprehensive Psychological Evaluation.

We are also happy to work with you in identifing a pscyhologist who meets your needs, and/or to assist you in pursuing a psychological evaluation.
